Varsity and junior varsity will both play for titles

DEXTER -- In the SCAA volleyball tournament the Dexter Lady Bearcats have advanced to the finals after defeating Bernie in three sets by scores of 22-25, 25-22 and 25-15. The varsity record is now 20-5-3 on the season.

The junior varsity squad also advanced to the finals of the JV bracket by downing Advance 25-16 and 25-12.

"We are proud of both teams for making it to the finals of the county tournament this year," said Dexter head coach Kris Vandeven. "Both teams have worked very hard this season and deserve a shot at a championship."

Vandeven said that the JV squad had a rough start, but once things got headed in the right direction the team played well to finish off the night.

As for the varsity, Vandeven expected Bernie to be tough.

"We figured Bernie would come here tonight wanting revenge from our last match-up," she said. "They were definitely a scrappy bunch tonight. We knew we would have to do a good job covering our hitters, due to Kristen Eaves' tough blocking."

"We still need to work on our serving game," she went on to say. "We always seem to miss serves at the time when we need to keep our momentum up the most. It was an intense game tonight, as both teams had big crowd in attendance. Overall, I am pleased with the girls' performance tonight. We are looking to redeem ourselves against Bell City on Saturday."

Cathryn Heil had 11 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and seven assists, Kayla Joyner had 11 digs, Jessica Satterfield had eight kills, 10 digs and 13 assists and Abbie Warren 13 kills, six digs and eight blocks.

The final, against Bell City, will be played on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Dexter.
