CANALOU -- Walter Vernon Britt, 81, died Oct. 18, 2008 at his son's home in Columbia.

Born Jan. 19, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, son of the late John and Helen Marie Manis Britt, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II in the occupational forces stationed in Okinawa, and had worked for MFA Fertilizer in Sikeston before retiring.

On July 27, 1951, he married Emma Burns who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: one son, Thomas Britt of Columbia; three daughters, Barbara Raines and Ethel Hurley of Columbia and Patricia Counsil of Portland; two brothers, David Britt of Sikeston and Gene Britt of LaCenter, Ky.; two sisters, Joann Summers and Janetta Dowdy of Sikeston; and nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Two brothers, Jackie Britt and Johnny Britt, and two sisters, Sarah Chesmore and Marge Davis, also preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston where services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Jack Burns, associate pastor of Smith Street Church of God, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery at Dogwood.
