City seeks public input on rainwater issue

SIKESTON -- Sikeston is making progress on stormwater runoff pollution but still has work to do.

Sikeston is one of 149 communities in the state required by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to have a program in place to control the impact of stormwater runoff and the pollutants carried by that runoff.

"Stormwater is nothing more than rainwater but it's what the rainwater carries along the way to our streams and ditches that has become the real issue," explained Steve Lee, street superintendent. "Unlike sewage, stormwater is not treated."

The city's Stormwater Advisory Board, which was formed in 2007 and first met in March 2008, will meet again at 11 a.m. Friday at City Hall. The board's purpose is to review city ordinances related to stormwater runoff issues and discuss what modifications are needed as part of the city's Stormwater Runoff Program.
