Scott Central blasts Kelly as seeds hold true

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- A hot start gave way to the exploration of the bench for Scott Central head coach Kenyon Wright on Saturday morning as his Braves squad blew away the Kelly Hawks 90-22. The top-seeded Scott Central squad is in search of a repeat crown in the 2009 Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament, held at the Show Me Center.

The Hawks came into the match-up as the lowest seed in the 16-team bracket, and quickly fell behind to the Braves in the first quarter. The 36-2 lead after one quarter of play, led to a 66-11 Scott Central lead at halftime.

Several bench players saw significant time for the Braves by the second quarter of Saturday's win, and again in the second half they saw the floor quite a bit for Wright.

"They practice everyday and it's good to get them in there to see what they can do," said Wright of the usage of bench players. "Anytime you can get the kind of experience that they need in a game situation, it's always good. We're going to need them all."

As for his starters, which forced the mercy clock after their high-scoring first half performance, Wright said that they could've been more solid, but said the early start, the bigger floor, and several other things could've played a role.

"We came out and did okay," he said. "It's a bigger floor, but we're going to have to come out and get some movement on it. Hopefully we can come out on Monday and see what we can do."

Kelly actually held the edge in the fourth quarter, outscoring Scott Central 6-5, but a 19-point third quarter extended the Braves' margin of victory by the time all was said and done.

Nate Wills, head coach for the Hawks, said after the game that his inexperienced squad has a lot to work on as the season progresses, but said the effort is there practice after practice.

"We didn't show it today, but we come in everyday and practice for two hours," said Wills. "They want to practice today.

"We're just short right now on fundamentals and talent. The one thing I was disappointed with, was that our effort wasn't very good today. We've just got to do a better job of everything."

Otto Porter led all scorers with 28 points in the win for Scott Central, while teammate Bobby Hatchett added 19. Dominique Porter added 15 points.

Dustin Crowden led the Hawks with six while Michael Kuykendall added five including a 3-pointer.

The Charleston Bluejays rolled by the Woodland Cardinals in their first-round match-up, 78-30.

A 21-point first quarter put the Bluejays out in front by 11 to begin the game and went on to go up by a score of 38-17 at the half. A 26-2 third quarter in favor of the Bluejays put the game out of reach.

Charleston's Greg Tucker led all scorers with 20 points. Deonte Jones added 14.

In the only close game of the night, the No. 8 seed Oran Eagles held on to defeat the No. 9 seeded Meadow Heights 74-68.

The Panthers would out-score Oran 27-25 in the fourth quarter but it just wasn't enough to secure the potential upset.

Nathan Michelsen led the Eagles with 29 points. Jon Morrow added a healthy 22 points in the win.

The No. 2 seed Notre Dame Bulldogs got out to a quick lead right from the tip to take care of the Scott City Rams in a 75-43 final.

A 27-13 first quarter gave the Bulldogs a substantial lead that would only get bigger as the game went on. A 44-25 half time lead had Notre Dame in prime position to win their first-round game.

Jacob Tolbert led all scorers with 22 points. Zach Cotner led Scott City with 12 while Skylar Cobb added nine.

After a close opening quarter the Jackson Indians asserted their dominance over the Chaffee Red Devils by outscoring them 25-0 in the second quarter. The Indians went on to win the game 66-23.

Chaffee was down by only six points at the end of the first period but was unable to score a single point in the second as Jackson went up 37-6 at the half.

Jackson's Henrie Williams scored a game-high 20 points while Caleb Newcomer and Zach McDowell added 12 and 10 respectively.

The Red Devils had three scorers on the night; Michael Rutherford, Alex Crowe and Jordan Yahn. Rutherford led Chaffee with 12 while Crowe added eight and Yahn chipped in with 3.
