NEW MADRID -- For New Madrid County Central's Jasimane Flennoy, this past Thursday will be one of the those days she remembers for the rest of her life.

In front of family and friends in NMCC's cafeteria, Flennoy signed her letter intent to play women's basketball for Shawnee Community College.

"I'm just speechless," Flennoy said. "I'm very proud and appreciative."

In guiding the Eagles to a 14-11 record this past season, Flennoy averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Shawnee's coach Gary Poyner expects great things out of his new recruit.

"I feel like the sky is still the limit," he said. "She hasn't necessarily reached her potential.

"I feel like she can come over and be an immediate impact and help us because last year and the past couple of years one of the areas that we lack in was post play and especially rebounding."

Flennoy had at least one other suitor in Mineral Area Community College. She cited Shawnee's criminal justice program as a big factor in her decision to attend there.

"That was my first priority to make sure the school that I did attend had what I was wanting to go in to to further my education," she said.

For NMCC's coach David Crockett, this marks the first player in his three-year stint with the school to go on to the next level.

"As a coach that's kind of one of your dreams," he said. "It's kind of one of your check points is that you want to see as many of your players move on to the next level as you can."

Crockett added with her skills on the defensive end he has no concerns about whether Flennoy's can succeed at the next level.

"She's going to bring an unbelievable rebounding ability," he said. "She's still got some maturity to go on the court, but with the proper work ethic and everything, if she gets in shape the way she's capable of she can be a force at the next level without a doubt."
