Sikeston baseball team takes care of East Prairie

Sikeston pounds out 15 hits in five innings

SIKESTON -- There was no shortage was offense for the Sikeston Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon when they took on the visiting East Prairie Eagles.

With 11 players combining for 15 hits the Bulldogs cruised to an easy 16-4 victory, closing it out in the fifth on the mercy rule.

"I thought we swung it pretty well," Sikeston coach Kevin Self said. "I know (East Prairie's) coach said they had lost most of their pitching so I think they threw some unproven guys.

"We made some adjustments after the first inning and we hit a lot of balls hard."

After the two teams played to a 1-1 tie coming in to the second, the Bulldogs lit up the Eagles in the bottom of the inning, combining for seven hits and eight runs in the inning to take a 9-1 lead.

East Prairie put up a run in the top of the third before Sikeston picked up where they left off the previous inning, putting another six runs on the board off five hits to put the game firmly in hand.

Rounding out the scoring the Eagles scored two in the fourth with Sikeston adding one in the inning, with East Prairie unable to put together any kind of a rally in the fifth.

"That's a tough one for us," Eagle's coach Gary Scott said. "Sikeston is a good team.

"They came out swinging the bats and were hitting the gaps. They just outplayed us today."

Improving Sikeston's record to 14-7, Ross Bohannon gets the win. He went the full five innings allowing four hits while not giving up a walk and striking out four.

On an afternoon where the offense shined, eight of the Bulldogs 15 hits were for extra bases with six doubles, a triple and a home run.

Tyler Anderson came away with a game high three hits, with two doubles.

Holding a comfortable lead most of the game, the Bulldogs were able to get some of the their bench players some playing time, with a total of seven subs making it to the plate.

Self was pleased to his bench come in and make an impact.

"They got in and they made some contributions," he said. "Cord (Sheehy) looked good at short making some nice plays and Caleb (Pruitt) comes in and gets two hits off the bench."

Dropping to 9-8 on the season, the Eagles had nine hits on the game. Connor Scott lead the team, going 2-for-2 with a double while Aaron Miller and Matt Dorris contributed the other two hits.

Starting pitcher Dalton Golightly takes the loss, going two innings allowing 14 runs on 13 hits while striking out two.

East Prairie gets almost a week off before its next matchup, taking on the visiting Chaffee Red Devils Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Sikeston takes on the visiting South Pemiscot Bulldogs Friday at 4 p.m.
