SIKESTON -- Post 114 got off to a rough start in the Junior Legion district tournament Thursday evening as Sikeston fell to Cape Girardeau Plaza Tire Service Post 63.

After Sikeston put up an early 3-0 advantage, Cape would get on a roll, outscoring Post 114 by 15 runs from there on out to win 17-5 in five innings on the 10-run mercy-rule.

"We came out not ready to play which we've been struggling with all year." Post 63 coach Jeremy Brinkmeyer said. "We just kicked it in to gear and realized that this is a big game and we needed it.

"We came out hit the ball well and made a lot of good plays."

Sikeston's early lead was capped off with a Clay Driskill home run to left that gave Post 114 the 3-0 lead.

Responding quickly, Cape pumped out six runs on four hits in the top of the second to claim the lead with a three-run advantage.

Though Post 114 would add a run in both the second and fourth innings, Post 63 wouldn't allow Sikeston to get within striking distance, scoring two, one and eight runs in the final three innings respectively.

Brinkmeyer credits a strong relief effort by pitcher Hunter Cox, who earned the win, at helping keeping Sikeston at bay.

"Hunter did an amazing job," he said. "He's done a great job for us all year and he didn't do anything different. He came in and threw strikes and mixed up his pitches really well."

On the game Post 63 out-hit Post 114, 12-8.

Leading Cape, Christian Cavaness went 3-for-4 while Aaron Wendell, Adam Pennington and Stephan Brennan contributed two hits apiece.

As for Sikeston, Post 114 had three multiple hitters on the evening with Jimmy Ash, Driskill and Cord Sheehy all contributing two hits.
