JEFFERSON CITY -- After an eventful first day that saw one of their own sit atop the podium at the Class 3 state track meet in Jefferson City on Friday, the Sikeston Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs track team failed to match the excitement on Saturday.

The boys team finished in the 10th spot after sitting in sixth on Friday while the girls toppled to 18th after a fourth place finish on Friday powered by the gold medal performance of junior Betsy Borgsmiller in the high jump.

The girls qualified in just one event on Saturday -- the 400-meter relay.

The team of Vonteria Applewhite, Darqueshionna Howard, Allisha Oglesby and Chazeton Redd could not shake their eighth seed after prelims and finished eighth in the finals as well with a time of 50.66. The winning time, ran by Lincoln College Prep, was just a hair faster at 49.20.

Behind Borgsmiller's first place finish, Jalen Peet's eighth place finish in the triple jump and the 400-meter relay team's eighth, the girls totaled 12 points which was good enough for a tie for 18th place with John Burroughs.

MICDS claimed the top girls score for the team trophy with 71 points.

As for the boys, the Bulldogs had three events to make up some ground on Saturday but it was too few and far between when looking up at Grandview's monster total of 75 points.

Grandview took first while McCluer South-Berkeley nabbed second with 66 points.

The boys' 400-meter relay team captured third as Quentin Washington, Darryl Howard, Ray Clark and James Watson ran a collective time of 43.40.

The 800-meter relay team took sixth with a time of 1:31.11. Washington, Nick Nichols, Kyland Gross and Clark each ran that event.

Terry Jamison finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 44-5 1/2 to take all-state honors.

The top eight finishers in each event automatically qualify for all-state.

All together, Sikeston totaled one state champion and 14 all-state performers within individual and relay team events.
