Junior High football works on basics
SIKESTON -- On Monday, the Sikeston junior high football team opened up what will be a week long football camp where willing seventh and eighth graders will learn some of the basics of the program's system.
"We went five weeks in the end of June and all of July where we got in the weight room and got some weight lifting in," Sikeston coach Brent Taylor said. "We got about five weeks of work with these seventh and eighth graders, now we'll have camp all this week."
After some early instructions, the kids separated into various groups, such as running backs, wide receivers and linemen, to receive position specific instruction.
"The kids are trying to get their roles and (the coaching staff) is trying to see what we got," Taylor said of the camp. "At first we try to let them go where they want to go and then we start adjusting after we watch them to start putting them where we need them."
Taylor said the camp is crucial so that when the regular season starts players aren't still adjusting to the speed of the game and what their role is.
"A lot of these kids our coming from Little League football and things here are so much faster," he said. "It goes by so much quicker and with kids coming to the camp I think they get a good jump start so that when we start the regular season they're not all trying to figure out what's going on."
Taylor said they had about 48 kids out on Monday and that he would like to see that number increase in the coming days.
Seventh and eighth graders wanting to play this upcoming season are encouraged to come out with practice starting at 6 p.m. and ending around 8 p.m. on the junior high practice field at Sikeston High School.
Camp will continue the rest of this week and end Thursday.
