POPLAR BLUFF -- May Hillis Edwards Hunter, 79, of Poplar Bluff, formerly of New Madrid, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Mrs. Hunter was born June 17, 1932, in Hillard, to Jesse and Minnie Helm Hillis. She graduated from Broseley High School in 1950. She went on to earn her college degree from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. Mrs. Hunter taught school for 36 years for New Madrid County R-1 School District. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Poplar Bluff. She loved to dance, play golf and re-arrange furniture.

On Dec. 18, 1955, she married Jim Edwards, who preceded her in death on March 10, 1992. She later married Hal Hunter who also preceded her in death.

Survivors include: her companion, Bud Winkler of Cairo, Ill.; one son, Neal Edwards of Anna, Ill.; two daughters, Mary Kay Edwards of Poplar Bluff and Sabra Hall and husband, Mark, of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Mary Hillis Crabtree of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Jim Hillis of Poplar Bluff; nine grandchildren, Jessie Hall of Poplar Bluff, Kristen Hall Sheubrooks of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Morgan Hall of Jackson, Miss., Ashley, Malorie and Sullivan Edwards of Anna, Ill., Gage and Abbie Pikey of New Madrid and Brady Pikey of Poplar Bluff; six great-grandchildren; Emily Edwards, Grae Pikey, Sophi Hicks, Jack Sheubrooks, Michelle Hall and Jessie Leigh Hall

Besides her husbands, Mrs. Hunter was also preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Minnie Hillis, and one brother, Joe Hillis.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at the Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home in Poplar Bluff. A second visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday Jan. 29, 2012, at the Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid, Mo., with funeral services following. The Rev. Byron Beck will officiate. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Madrid with the Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
