County clerks: Be on lookout for new voter ID cards

Sunday, April 29, 2012

SIKESTON-- Registered voters in the area should begin checking their mailbox for new voter ID cards.

Each local election authority is required to issue new voter identification cards every two years, according to state statutes.

New voter IDs are being mailed to registered voters in Scott County this week, Scott County Clerk Rita Milam said Tuesday.

"Voters should examine their card closely to make sure all of the information is correct," Milam said. "If there is an error on the card, please complete the section on the back of the card and mail to the County Clerk's Office. If the information is correct, then keep the card in your wallet."

Milam noted that the boundary line between Scott County's first and second districts was redrawn last year due to the 2010 Census.

Other boundary lines that changed in Scott County due to the Census include those for the House of Representatives and two city wards in Sikeston.

In Sikeston, "some voting precincts were combined to accommodate these boundary changes," Milam said.

Mississippi County Clerk Junior DeLay said his office will also be mailing out new voter identification cards to all registered voters in the coming weeks.

New voter ID cards in Mississippi County are ivory colored and are to replace any other voter ID card previously issued, he said.

"Election judges will be instructed only to recognize the ivory colored card as a current ID card," DeLay said.

The new cards will contain information regarding the voter's new voting districts following various voting district realignments due to redistricting, DeLay said.

Registered voters in New Madrid County will probably see their new cards a bit after they are received by residents in Scott and Mississippi counties, according to New Madrid County Clerk Clement Cravens.
