SIKESTON -- Thanks to quick, correct action taken by Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities personnel and an adequately equipped regional hazardous materials team, things are almost back to normal at the Sikeston Power Plant.

BMU officials reported the explosion of a trailer containing hydrochloric acid at the Power Plant at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

With member of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety being part of the SEMO Hazmat Team, the first elements of a hazmat team were on the scene within minutes of the spill being reported, according to DPS Capt. Ken Dicus, a supervisor for the hazmat team.

Additional manpower and equipment then continued to arrive in the hours following initial response. In addition to Sikeston, the SEMO Hazmat Team includes Jackson and Cape Girardeau.
