Squirrels place 5th in own 16-team tournament
CHARLESTON -- Rebounding from a loss in the quarterfinals, the Charleston Fighting Squirrels won back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday to claim fifth place in the Fighting Squirrel Classic.
After their close 1-0 loss to Poplar Bluff's Senior Babe Ruth team on Friday, the Squirrels came out on Saturday and notched a 10-9 win over Mayfield, Ky., in eight innings.
Tied after seven frames, Charleston got a walk-off single from Tim Fox to score a runner from third in the bottom of the eighth that moved them into the fifth-place contest on Sunday.
Facing the Missouri Bulls 16U team, the Squirrels took a slim 1-0 lead in the top of the third before scoring runs in the fifth and sixth to move ahead 3-0. A three-run rally by the Bulls in the bottom of the sixth tied things up, but Charleston scored one final run in the top of the seventh to seal a 4-3 win.
"Anytime you can finish in the top five out of 16 teams (it's not a bad finish)," Charleston head coach coach Michael Minner said. "We had some quality teams here. It's a long weekend and we could very well be playing right now (in the championship) after losing 1-0 to Poplar Bluff.
"So we feel like we had a good weekend and definitely got better."
With the two wins Charleston moves back over the .500 mark to 10-9 on the season.
Next up, the Squirrels will hit the road to play Poplar Bluff on Tuesday with the first game of a doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
The Jackson Senior Babe Ruth squad fell to Park Hills Senior Legion 5-4 on Saturday, ending their tournament in the loser's bracket.
Leaving the bases loaded three times with less than two outs, Jackson was unable to get a timely hit to score needed runs. Scott City's Heath Pobst finished 2 for 3 with two doubles and a walk.
Jackson is now 3-7 with three of those losses coming in one-run games.
Jackson will be back in action today when they host Jackson Junior Legion for a doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
Sikeston Post 114 was scheduled to play in the loser's bracket on Saturday but were unable to play due to a shortage of players.
