Briefly: Sikeston escapes Poplar Bluff, 19-7
SIKESTON -- It won't go down as one of the prettiest games they've played, but the Sikeston Bulldogs continue to put 'W's' in the win column as they defeated Poplar Bluff 19-7 on Friday night at Sikeston Public Schools Stadium.
In a game that slowed to a crawl in the second half due penalties and sloppy play, Bulldog quarterback Kyland Gross had one of the best games of his career.
The 5-foot-10 senior rushed for a career-high 167 yards on nine carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 71 and 57 yards. He threw for a career-high 105 yards with a touchdown. In addition, he intercepted a pass on defense.
Sikeston's defense did the rest, limiting the Mules to 142 yards of offense while holding them out of the end zone. Poplar Bluff's lone score came on a Bulldog fumble in the end zone that the Mules recovered.
Sikeston improves to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in the SEMO Conference. Poplar Bluff falls to 2-3 and 0-3 in league play.
