60 years ago

SIKESTON - A total of 19 students have enrolled in the Red Cross nursing program. Mrs. Howard Dunaway is the teacher. The response was so great more classes might be added.

40 years ago

SIKESTON - City Clerk John Vaughn reports a big response to a Daily Standard call for input on Sunday closing. About 30 responses arrived in the mail at city hall. "Usually there is little public reaction to any matter such as this," said Vaughn.

SIKESTON - Over 500 people showed up at the DAEOC office for a cheese giveaway today. Lines were so long the office opened an hour early. About 2,500 pounds of cheese were given away. DAEOC said more than 6,000 pounds will be distributed.

SIKESTON - On Feb. 12, Sikeston teachers will join other educators in bombarding their legislators in Jefferson City with a letter-writing campaign. Educators are asking business leaders, parents and concerned citizens to join them in writing letters to the governor, state senators and state representatives. "All the letters will be hand-delivered by us to the Capitol building," said Jackie Cowan, president of the Sikeston Community Teachers Association. The goal of the campaign is to encourage elected officials to provide additional money for education this session.


SIKESTON - The clothes that hang on the clotheslines were the only property the VanVickle family had left after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their home Tuesday, three miles south of Sikeston on Highway 61. No one was home at the time. Firefighters from Sikeston, Morehouse, Miner and Matthews had trouble controlling the fire due to lack of water.
