Time to slow down

School opens Thursday in Sikeston and the Department of Public Safety is working to ensure children will be safe. "We are going to go into a high-enforcement mode for at least the first month or two," said Capt. Mark Crocker of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety. DPS will try several things to make motorists aware they are traveling at speeds unacceptable in the school zones. The department has already had the radar cart, which is borrowed from Troop E of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, for about a month in different school zones and it will continue to be stationed at locations until mid-September. "It lets people see what their speeds are as they go through school zones," Crocker said. If going too fast in a school zone "you are not going to be able to stop," he said."Over the years we've been very fortunate in that we haven't had a lot of accidents in school zones," Crocker noted. "We'd like to continue this trend."
