Portageville, NMCC to square off in Gideon tournament

GIDEON - The New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles and the Portageville Lady Bulldogs both won first round games at the Lady Bulldog Classic in Gideon on Tuesday night.

NMCC outscored Malden 23-8 in the second quarter to take control of the contest and went on to win 61-27 over the Lady Wave.

Malden led 10-9 after one quarter of action, but the Lady Eagles stepped up their defense and outscored the Lady Wave 38-24 in the second and third quarters.

Freshman Shameka Williams led NMCC in scoring for the second consecutive game with 19 points. Heavenly Wren also had 19 points and freshman Jasmine Flennoy rou

nded out the double-digit scorers for the Lady Eagles with 12 points.

Paige Jimerson and Whitney Tanner contributed off the bench for the Lady Eagles with six and five points respectively.

Dominica Kelly led Malden with 13 points and Classy Lee chipped in with six points for the Lady Wave.

Portageville proved to be too much for the South Pemiscot Lady Bulldogs and cruised to the semifinals with a 74-10 victory.

Portageville led 28-4 at the end of the first quarter and 43-6 at the half. Portageville held South Pemiscot to only five field goals en route to there third straight win of the young season.

Junior Kellye Penn led Portageville with 19 points and senior sensation Hannah Rone continued her stellar play with 16 points. Lauren Kellams dominated in the paint and had 15 points for Portageville.

NMCC (2-0) and Portageville (3-0) will meet in one semifinal game at the Lady Bulldog Classic. Tip is set for 7 p.m. Caruthersville and Campbell will clash in the other semifinal game at Gideon.
