ID theft arrest is made in Sikeston

SIKESTON -- A St. Louis man wanted for identification theft was arrested by Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers Monday.

According to reports, at 2:59 p.m. Monday, officers with DPS responded to a report of identity theft at U.S. Bank located at 104 East Center St.

When the officers arrived, the suspect, Glover D. Cody, 34, fled from the bank and resisted arrest. He was taken into custody for resisting arrest, assault on an officer and forgery.

Cody confessed to obtaining a falsified Missouri identification of Robert Aspley. He used the identification to cash a check for $8,000 and was attempting to cash a $15,000 check in Sikeston. He had also attempted to cash a check in Cape Girardeau.

He is currently incarcerated and is being held on warrants for two counts of forgery and one count of resisting arrest.

This is the second incident of this kind in the last three weeks where subjects from the St. Louis area were involved. Each involved several suspects working together with various types of false identification cashing checks. The identification is either an alias name (totally false) or an identity theft (where they have assumed the identity of a person and have obtained various forms of identifications).

Banks and businesses are urged to use caution when cashing checks. The identity thefts and the use of counterfeit checks have shown a large increase during the last year. The losses associated with these types of thefts are very substantial. Checking a second form of identification is becoming increasingly important, as Missouri ID's and licenses have been created and used to cash these types of checks.
