BENTON - The Kelly Hawks improved to 6-7 on the season with a 70-28 win against Scott-Mississippi Conference foe Chaffee on Friday night at Kelly High School.

The Hawks were never threatened as they led 19-6 after one quarter and 48-13 at the half against the winless Red Devils.

But despite Chaffee's struggles, Kelly head coach Nick Lanpher was pleased that his team didn't overlook them.

"We played with a lot of intensity like we've been playing the last three games," said Lanpher. "They've done a complete turnaround from how they were playing early in the season. Why we waited so late to do this, I don't know. I credit some of that to me as well as them. I was a little overconfident in them."

Chris Romas led the Hawks with 24 points, including four 3-pointers.

Trent Walters had 12 points, Kent Deason had 10 points and Michael Glastetter added nine points.

"We've got nine guys that can score in double digits," said Lanpher. "All of them can score pretty consistently."

Chaffee was led by Brandon Davis' 19 points.

Kelly will play East Prairie in the Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament on Monday at Kelly High School.

Kelly won the junior varsity game 55-25 against Chaffee. Jordan Felter had 12 points to lead the Hawks. Augi Orr had six points to lead Chaffee.

DEXTER - The Dexter Bearcats got back on the winning track with a 73-21 win against rival Bernie on Friday.

Dexter (10-4) led 20-5 after one quarter and 40-8 at the half on their homecoming night.

In the wake of their 58-54 loss to Portageville on Thursday night, Dexter head coach Eric Sitze revamped the starting lineup.

"I hope it wakes my starters up a little bit," said Sitze. "We talked a lot about improving ourselves over the next week or so, trying to get better. I don't think we necessarily had a terrible effort against Portageville last night. There's a lot of things there that we can improve on. I just think we're a little too relaxed right now."

But the team seemed to cure some ills against Bernie, which is going through a tough time of late with injuries to some key players, including standout Zach Dill.

Bernie started two freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors.

"Bernie is trying hard," said Sitze. "They're doing all they can with what they have. You have to admire them for that."

Dexter had 11 different players reach the scoring column. They were led by Derek Demaree's 18 points. Britt Arnold led Bernie with 11 points.
