SIKESTON - Ed Matthews, son of E.C. Matthews, has been sent from the Great Lakes, Ill., Naval Training Station to the Navy Pier, Chicago for further training.

SIKESTON - Mr. and Mrs. Ray C. Marsh, son William and Miss Lois Buchanan returned Monday from Kansas City, where they spent Christmas with Pvt. Ray Carl Marsh Jr., who is attending an Army school of aeronautics.

SIKESTON - The postal rates for 1st class postage moved up a penny Jan. 7 and it now costs more to mail letters and cards. As of Monday, it costs 5 cents instead of 4 to mail a letter and 4 cents instead of 3 for a post card. It now costs 8 cents, up from 7, for air mail.

SIKESTON - Earl McConnell, retiring member of the Sikeston Rescue Squad and volunteer fire department, was honored by the squad for his 14 years of service. The plaque was presented by Joe Burton, president of the Sikeston Rescue Squad.

DEXTER - A new electroplating plant to be locally owned by two Dexter residents is expected to be operational by late January, according to a spokesman for the plant.

SIKESTON - Elvis Presley is the undisputed King of Rock 'n' Roll and Presley in the form of a 29-cent-postage stamp is expected to be the No. 1 smash of all time on the postal department's chart. The Sikeston Post Office opened today with 16,000 Elvis stamps in its vault.
