Sikeston upsets Kelly
SIKESTON -- Sikeston's softball team possibly recorded its most impressive win in program history on Wednesday afternoon, upsetting Kelly 3-2.
The Lady Bulldogs finally got a handle on their defensive woes, committing just one error to topple the traditional Southeast Missouri power.
"I can't ever remember beating Kelly in varsity," said Sikeston coach Jenny Hobeck. "They've got a really tough team -- one of the best in our area. The girls just did a great job on defense and we came out hitting the ball."
After four scoreless innings, Kelly drew first blood with a run in the top of the fifth. Sikeston then took the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Julie Annesser and Kayla Crocker both scored.
Allison Blurton scored in the sixth inning to put Sikeston up 3-1.
Kelly came back to plate one run in the final inning to make the final 3-2.
"The girls came into the game really focused," said Hobeck. "Kelly is a big rival of ours, and we always try and play our best against them. This was the best I've seen our team play on defense. As far as running the bases and being aggressive, we looked better than we have all season."
Blurton pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for Sikeston, allowing five hits and seven walks with six strikeouts.
Molly Brinkmeyer threw the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up one run off one hit.
"Blurton did a good job pitching," said Hobeck. "She had a few too many walks. I'm really proud of Molly Brinkmeyer for coming in and holding on for us."
At the plate, Sikeston finished with six hits on the day. Silverthorn had a single and an RBI, Blurton had a single with a run, Annesser had a single with a run and Crocker had an RBI with a run.
Other hits came from Barbara Hobbs and Erin Wibbenmeyer. Kelly also had six hits in the game. Mindy Robert led the way, going 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and a run. Other hits came from Monica Senciboy, Whittney Beggs, Ashley Rockett and Stephanie Hency.
Michelle Collins and Beggs both pitched in the loss.
Sikeston (3-5) will travel to East Prairie today for a 4 p.m. game.
"I think this will be a big confidence booster for us," said Hobeck. "We play East Prairie (Thursday) and will be looking for another win. Next week, we face Notre Dame. We know that will be a tough game, but we can hang with them."
In Wednesday's junior varsity game, Sikeston defeated Kelly 4-2.
Brinkmeyer got the win for the Lady Bulldogs, allowing five his with two strikeouts.
Offensively, Kaycie Williams had a single with a run, Hallie Davis scored two runs and had a single, Brinkmeyer provided a double with an RBI, Beth Ziegenhorn had a sacrifice RBI and Jessica Jackson scored a run.
