Portageville avoids Hayti upset

SENATH -- Hayti gave top-seeded Portageville all it wanted Thursday night in the 2A District 1 semifinals at Senath-Hornersville.

The Indians outscored the heavily-favored Bulldogs 12-7 in the first quarter and led 20-17 at halftime.

Portageville rallied in the second half with an 11-4 run, eventually outscoring Hayti 25-15 over the final two quarters.

J.T. Williams led Portageville with 14 points. Aaron Bidewell and Eric Booker each contributed nine.

Dallas Winda paced Hayti with 10 points. In Thursday's other semifinal, Twin Rivers hammered Caruthersville, 69-47.

Portageville will face the Royals in tonight's district championship game at 7:30 p.m.

FREDERICKTOWN -- The Indians ended the season at 14-11 after they fell behind early in a Class 1A, District 3 semifinal game. South Iron took a 13-4 lead early.

St. Vincent got within a point in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough. Tyler Wengert led with 18 points. Matt Wengert had 10.

FREDERICKTOWN -- Fifth-seeded Meadow Heights bowed to top-seeded Virburnum in the Class 1A, District 3 semifinals.

Unable to overcome a 36-6 disparity at the free-throw line, Meadow Heights concluded its first winning season since 1990 at 15-11.

Josh Mayfield led Meadow Heights with 22 points and Joey Bell had 16.
