Harold Swinney

GLEN CARBON, Ill. - Harold W. Swinney, 85, died at 9:05 p.m. March 7, 2005, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon.

Born Oct. 20, 1919, in Monroe County, Mo., to the late Frank H. and Myrtie Lee Mallory Swinney, he was a machinist at Olin Corp. for more than 46 years, retiring in 1986. A member of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II, he was past post commander for Veterans of Foreign War Post 1308 and a member of the East Alton American Legion Post 794. Also he was an organizer of the restoration of the Milton Cemetery, Junior Achievement, Alton Parks and Recreation and Boy Scout Troop 7.

On Dec. 28, 1940, in Alton, Ill., he married Marcella M. Brueggeman, who survives.

Also surviving are: four daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanne and Chuck Stalker of Sikeston, Mo., Liz and John Kuhn of Godfrey, Ill., Mary and Steve Lamken of Grand Island, Neb., and Dorothy and Jeff Ebbeler of Brighton, Ill.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Vicky Swinney of Mt. Vernon, Ind.; and 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Mallory Swinney, and one sister, Waunita Baker.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Gent Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton.

Burial will follow at the Roselawn Memory Garden with full military graveside rites provided by VFW Post 1308.
