Herman Jacobs

EAST PRAIRIE -- Herman Grady Jacobs, 93, died at 1:50 p.m. March 13, 2005, at his home in East Prairie.

Born Sept. 17, 1911, in Cleburne County, Ala., son of the late William Fletcher and Martha Jane Blackmon Jacobs, he was a teacher and coach in Alabama schools following his graduation from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Ala. After working as an accountant for several years, he took the position as supervisor of heavy construction for building lock and dam systems on waterways until his retirement. Moving to Mississippi County from Sevierville, Tenn., in 1989, he was a member of the First General Baptist Church in East Prairie.

On Jan. 19, 1978, he married Helen L. Conyers who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two sons, Dan Edward Jacobs of Chattanooga, Tenn., and John Pullen Jacobs of Woodland, Ala.; one daughter, Jo Alice Mospam of Woodland; two stepsons, Fred L. Duty and Clifford L. Duty of East Prairie; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Two sons, Bobby H. Jacobs and a stillborn infant; two brothers, Homer L. Jacobs and Otis L. Jacobs; and one grandson preceded him in death.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 pm. Tuesday at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Dale Billingsley, pastor of the First General Baptist Church in East Prairie, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Dogwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Dan McFarland, Andy Youngblood, Kenny Duty, Clifford Duty, Lee Duty and Terry Duty.
