SIKESTON - In high school notes, Jay Dowden and Graham Sadler have received certificates from the Scholastic magazine for their achievement with vocabulary work.

MATTHEWS - Mrs. David Croom and Mrs. Frederick Mitchell have been appointed by WICS Inc. to screen girls for the Job Corps in New Madrid County. Their office will be at the Neighborhood Service Center. Any boy or girl between the ages of 16 and 21 who has finished school or has been a dropout for more than three months is eligible for the program.

CAPE GIRARDEAU - Sikeston Bulldog golfers converged on the Cape Girardeau Country Club yesterday afternoon and walked away with the first-place trophy of the Southeast Missouri High School Golf Tournament.

SIKESTON - Fifth grade students at Lee Hunter Elementary School in Sikeston presented "A Salute to Irving Berlin" Tuesday afternoon for their classmates. The students, under the direction of Barbara Sikes, also presented the production for parents and guests Tuesday night. The salute provided an historical background of music revues and life of composer Irvin Berlin. Portraying Irvin Berlin was Jeff Purvis, who sang, "Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning."

KENNETT - The Sikeston ninth graders grabbed the triple crown on Monday, winning the Semo Conference track meet with 186 points, giving them three first place finishes at the three Invitationals they have entered. "It was a great end to a great season, " commented Sikeston head coach Jim Johnson.

MORLEY - Valedictorians of the 21-member 1997 Scott County Central graduating class are Kelley Dawn Rodgers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Rodgers, and Gary Lee Mize Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Mize of Morley.
