Sikeston tennis nips Cape Central

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Bulldog tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 5-4 victory against Cape Central on Tuesday at Sikeston High School.

Sikeston won four of the six singles matches and one of three doubles matches.

"It's a big win," said Sikeston coach Brian James. "It was a rough day to play with the high winds. It was difficult for both of us, but it was good to come away with a win. I thought we had some pretty decent individual performances and we were fortunate enough to hold on for the win."

In singles, Peters Jones (S) beat Tyler Roeger 8-2; Marc Leible (S) beat Adam Baron 8-3; Chris Robey (S) beat Kevin Rohatgi 8-4; Kyle Weeks (S) lost to Will Ramsey 6-8; Sam Zhao (S) lost to Anton Heemskerk 5-8; and Chris Matthews (S) beat Carson Kelley 8-5.

In doubles, Jones and Leible beat Roeger and Rohatgi 8-3; Robey and Weeks lost to Baron and Ramsey 4-8; and Zhao and Matthews beat Kelley and Heemskerk 4-8.

In the junior varsity match, Sikeston saw Grant Ingram, Matt Strom, Karl Erlenbush, Ross Bucher and Wamidh Jamil all won singles matches.

Logan Wagoner and Ingram also teamed up for a doubles victory.

CHARLESTON - The Charleston Bluejays tennis team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 5-4 home victory against Dexter on Tuesday.

In singles, Charleston saw Alex Peterson beat Jake Smith 8-0; Lee Hess beat Derek Roberts 8-6; Jake Garrard beat Ben Smith 8-6 and Josh Moxley beat Gabe Smith 8-2.

Charleston's Blake Branum lost to James Ford 6-8 and Drew Kemp lost to Derek Clark 4-8.

In doubles, Charleston's Branum and Hess beat B. Smith and Ford 8-3 and Peterson/Garrard beat J. Smith/Roberts 8-1.

Kemp and Moxley lost to Clark/G. Smith 5-8.

"I'm happy that we won," said Charleston coach Mitch Baker. "We played pretty well. We are still playing without Derek Hoppe, our number two player, who is out with an illness. I was real pleased with the way everyone stepped up."

Charleston will play at Poplar Bluff on Thursday at 4 p.m.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston golf team improved to 8-3 on the season with a win against Kennett on Tuesday at the Sikeston Country Club, 164-to-170.

"I think the team joke these days is what number will be higher, the low medalist score or the wind in mile per hour," said Sikeston coach Rick Oetting. "I think the score was the lower today."

E. C. Atchison shot a 1-over par 36. Matt Bain turned in a 41 while Martin Schaefer 43 and Clint Bohannon 44 rounded out the scores for the team.

The JV scored a win by forfeit. Ed Pike had the low JV score with a 45.

"Kennett's numbers are down this year and they can't fill out a full squad," said Oetting.

Sikeston returns to the Country Club Thursday when they host Malden at 4 p.m.

SOCCER

SIKESTON - The Sikeston girls soccer team suffered a 9-0 loss to Cape Central on Tuesday at the Sikeston Recreational Complex.

Sikeston (2-6) was outshot 25-9 in the match. Cape Central's Megan McDonald led the way with three goals and four assists.

Molly Brinkmeyer recorded 16 saves in place of injured goalkeeper Audra Wooley.

"It's probably the worst game we've played all year," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long. "We didn't play well as a team. We've had six games in the last six days. We're pretty beat up and injured today."

Sikeston's junior varsity lost 7-0 to fall to 0-4 on the season.

Over the weekend, Sikeston competed in the Carbondale Invitational where they went 1-2.

They Lady Bulldogs lost a pair of 4-0 games to Springfield (Ill.) and Champaign Central.

Sikeston defeated Crete Monet 4-2 for their only win. In that game, Paige Silverthorn and Jessica Owens scored goals as did freshmen Ashley Sexton and Emily Taylor.

Sikeston will play at Perryville next Tuesday at 4 p.m.
