SAY Team of the Day: Ponder Funeral Home

Monday, August 5, 2002

SIKESTON -- Ponder Funeral Home took second place in the Rookie League this year, finishing with a record of 10-4.

"I think we had a pretty good year," said Ponder assistant coach Jay Sheehy. "I think we did better than we probably should have. We started off 5-0, then we lost two, then we lost our last two games. We were better at the first of the year."

The team took fourth place in the year-end tournament.

Drew Harper played first base, Andrew Hicks was at second, Cord Sheehy was at short and Ben Walker played third base. Ryan Vanover was on the pitcher's mound and Matt Keene was behind the plate.

The outfield consisted of Zachary Fisher, Ian Meeks, Layton Davis, Luke Haines and Bayleah James.

Harper and Sheehy both made the first team for all-stars. Walker and Hicks were both named to the second team.

One highlight this season was beating Randy's RX in extra innings.

"That was probably one of the best games we played," said Sheehy. "We had real good support from the parents."
