New banners will soon be waving

Sunday, June 6, 2004

In this month's newspaper update I wanted to touch on a couple of different topics.

The Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce was busy in the month of May with Springfest, ribbon cuttings, mixers and, of course, economic development efforts. As always we are providing referrals to our members and continue to expand our Website to better promote our members and the Sikeston/Miner area. We will continue to add to our video e-streaming on the Website.

Over the next six to eight weeks, you will see banners going up in Sikeston as a way to dress up the community. I would like to thank the businesses and individuals who sponsored the banners. It is our hope to expand the program next year into Miner, the west part of Malone Avenue and a few more to the downtown area. They will be a nice way to welcome people into the area.

I would like to congratulate the Bootheel Regional Training Group on another successful year of training. Over 350 employees from 10 area businesses/manufacturers received $55,000 worth of customized training free of charge through the efforts of the organization. The organization is under the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce and has been operating for the last two years with great success in securing training dollars from federal and state programs. The training provided improves our workforce and gives us another asset to use in marketing the community to prospective employers.

I want to remind everyone that the 10th Annual Redneck Barbecue will be Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Sikeston Sports Complex/Clinton Building. It is free to the public and we hope everyone comes out for a day of family fun. I will give a more detailed report in the July update.
