NEW MADRID - A mistake in the city's liquor-by-the-drink license fee was discussed in a meeting of the New Madrid City Council Tuesday. A review of the ordinance showed that liquor by-the-drink establishments in New Madrid are to be charged $450. According to Shelby Savat, city clerk, they were charged $300 for the last three years.

EAST PRAIRIE - Approximately 1,200 Union and Confederate reenactors are expected to participate in the Battle of Belmont, commemorating the 130th anniversary of General Ulysses S. Grant's first battle of the Civil War on Oct. 26 and 27.


NEW MADRID - The Sikeston High varsity football team's first offensive play of the 1991 season was the equivalent to a home run in baseball, a slam dunk in basketball, a hole-in-one in golf, a knockout punch in boxing. On first- and 10 from the New Madrid 41, quarterback Scott Collins dropped back, spotted wide receiver Justin Towe streaking down the sideline and connected on a beautiful strike for the score. Sikeston rolled to 45-16.


SIKESTON - There is a growing number of older Missourians retaining their health and maintaining their homes until an older age, according to the University Extension's Office of Social and Economic Data Analysis. As a result, the number of households in Sikeston have increased since the 1980s. The 1991 census shows a total population of 17,641, compared to 17,431 in 1980.
