This letter is in response to a SpeakOut comment that appeared in the Jan. 16 Standard Democrat. The caller felt that it was inappropriate to run a photo and article about Girl Scout Cookie sales on the front page of the newspaper.

I disagree with the caller on two counts. First of all, the Standard Democrat is not a big city newspaper. Fortunately, for our citizens, there were no murders, bank robberies or big drug busts to be reported on the front page that day.

Many of us feel fortunate to live in a place where front page space is not always taken up by bad news. Young people will always be the future and when there is space available, I love seeing their photos on the front page.

Secondly, Girl Scouting has been an important part of growing up for young women for the past 90 years. It is a wonderful organization that has taught self-esteem, values, citizenship and friendship to generations of girls.

Girl Scout Cookie sales provide 50 percent o the budget for the local Cotton Boll Council. When you buy a box of cookies, you are also making a donation to the future of Girl Scouting.

I applaud the Standard Democrat for their coverage of youth activities.
