MALDEN - Breman Van Bibber has been named principal of the local high school to replace T.E. Stallings, who was recently elected superintendent of schools here to replace R.A. Harper, who resigned to accept a position in Maryville, Tenn.

SIKESTON - Mrs. Paul Crandall entertained a group of children Saturday at her home in honor of her son, Paul Jr.'s fourth birthday anniversary.

MATTHEWS - Groundbreaking for the new Christ Lutheran Church was held Saturday at 8 a.m. at the new site on the corner of Main and Calvin streets. The Rev. Harold Belsheim, pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, Sikeston and the Matthews church, was in charge.

SIKESTON - The strong lightning, which moved through the area in the heavy thunderstorm July 4, damaged The Daily Standard's main controller system. This resulted in the inability to process local copy though the computer system. Thus, today's publications contains only limited local and Associated Press articles.

SIKESTON - The construction has begun on a 7,500-square foot expansion of the Sikeston Public Library. Public officials, library board members, Congressman Bill Emerson and Missouri State Librarian Monterla Hightower attended groundbreaking ceremonies for the library project. Officials expect construction to be completed by the end of next March.

EAST PRAIRIE - Little Mister East Prairie Kyle Jackson, 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Jackson of East Prairie, like the members of his court had big grins in the Fourth of July parade. Named first runner-up was Allstun Hunter, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Hunter of Sikeston, and second runner-up was 3-year-old Justin Pruitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Pruitt of Sikeston.
