Sikeston Legion falls in 10th
CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston Senior American Legion Post 114 baseball team fell to Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons Legion 6-5 in 10 innings on Wednesday at Capaha Field.
Ford & Sons sent the game into extra innings on what was described as a "questionable" balk call against Sikeston pitcher Ben Pyles with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Cape then scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a wild pitch to bring home Lee Essner.
"It was a good ballgame," said Sikeston Legion coach Charlie Dye.
"We had several opportunities to put more runs on the board and we didn't get it done. Anytime you go on the road like that you've got to take care of business and not put it in the other team's hands. We had plenty of opportunities and didn't get them cashed in."
Essner was the winning pitcher, throwing all 10 innings. He allowed 11 hits and five runs. He struck out three and walked three.
Pyles took the loss in 2/3 of an inning pitched.
Ross Merideth started Sikeston and threw six innings. He allowed two runs off five hits with four strikeouts.
Jordan Penn threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs.
Joey Bickings carried the big stick for Sikeston on offense. He went 2-4 with a home run and a triple with three RBIs. Jordan Kimball also had two hits, including a home run.
Lance Rhodes went 2-4 and Matt Smith was 2-5 with an RBI-single.
Brandon Crook, Drew Lawrence and Tyler Stahl each had one hit for Sikeston.
Ford & Sons was led by Kendal Deason and Corey Huskey with three hits each.
"We started out swinging real good but then we got away from what we do best," said Dye.
Sikeston falls to 10-7 on the season and 2-2 in district play.
Sikeston will compete in the Anheuser Busch Tournament in St. Louis starting on Friday.
