SHS junior varsity soccer team rolls past Farmington

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston beat Farmington 7-1 in the Cape Central Junior Varsity Soccer Tournament on Tuesday.

Chris Carnell scored two goals for the Bulldogs and provided two assists in the win.

"We played a really good game against them," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long. "We played them earlier in the year at Farmington and tied 0-0. Getting that many goals and controlling the game was really big for our confidence."

Tarryl Booker scored Sikeston's first goal at the 12 minute mark off a Carnell assist. One minute later, Adam Gillean scored on a Michael Ragsdell assist.

At 28 minutes, Carnell scored off an assist from Gillen to make it 3-0 at halftime.

"We had a big game from Chris Carnell," said Long. "We were all working together and kept the ball up on their end the whole time."

At 40 minutes, Andrew Box scored on an assist from Cody Black. Five minutes later, Sam Ruessler scored on a Carnell assist. At the 55 minute mark, Kyle Howard scored on a Ruessler assist.

Farmington's only goal came at 59 minutes, when Zack Henson scored on a Brad Green assist.

Sikeston's last goal came at 61 minutes, when Carnell scored unassisted.

The Bulldogs (8-5-4) finished with 26 shots on goal and keepers Cody Cooper and John Peeler made four saves. Farmington had five shots on goal and made 17 saves.

Sikeston's junior varsity team will face Jackson on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the next round of the tournament.

"We play a few freshmen up on varsity," said Long. "If we didn't do that, our jayvee would be even better. We are pretty excited about the future."

VARSITY VOLLEYBALL

ORAN -- Oran's volleyball team won its final match of the regular season on Tuesday, beating Charleston in straight sets: 28-26, 25-20.

Amber Seyer had nine kills and three blocks. Courtney Nenninger had five kills and six points. Carmen Duncan had six points, and Amber Walter provided 15 assists.

"It was a season of ups and downs," said Oran coach Tonya Skinner. "We're playing better right now, so we're hopefully going into districts next week."

Oran (8-18-2) will face Richland in the first round of district play on Monday at 5 p.m. This year the district is at Bell City.
