NEW MADRID -- New Madrid County Central's Lawrence Smith signed a letter of intent to play football for Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound linebacker and fullback was recruited by Culver-Stockton defensive coordinator Shawn Fowler.

"We feel like Lawrence can step in and be a quality player for us," said Fowler. "He works hard, plays hard and carries himself well. He's the type of kid you want to have in your program."

Smith will join former NMCC teammate George Strickland, who is slated to be the starting safety for the Wildcats this season.

"I hope to make an impact right away," said Smith. "I plan on being 100 percent better than I was (in high school)."

Smith played a major role on NMCC's state finalist team last year as a junior.

He was one of two starting seniors this year, but was sidelined the final three weeks of the regular season with a hamstring injury.

"He's a great young man," said NMCC coach Steve Rogers. "We're just real happy he's going to get a chance to further his education and playing career at Culver-Stockton."

Last year the Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-7, going 4-6 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Culver-Stockton returns most of that team, including former Hazelwood Central standout Sterling Finney, giving the team high hopes for the upcoming season.
