Sikeston bats go silent in 3-1 loss to Cape Central
SIKESTON - The Sikeston softball team fell to 5-7 on the season with a 3-1 loss to Cape Central on Tuesday at the Sikeston Recreational Complex.
Sikeston pitcher Allison Blurton had a strong pitching effort ruined by the Lady Bulldogs' silent bats.
Cape Central's (11-6) Wadlington struck out 11 batters in seven innings, allowing five hits and one run.
"Wadlington is a really good pitcher," said Sikeston head coach Jenny Hobeck. "She brings the ball pretty good."
Blurton took the loss in seven innings of work. She allowed three runs off four hits. She struck out five and walked three.
"Blurton did pretty good on the mound," said Hobeck. "She only allowed them four hits, but our defense let us down. If it wasn't for those three errors it could've different. Cape's a really solid team. They're one of the best teams in our area."
Cape Central led 3-0 before Sikeston was able to break the shutout with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Julie Annesser led Sikeston with two hits and an RBI. Paige Silverthorn had one hit with a run scored. Molly Brinkmeyer and Jessica Owens had Sikeston's only other hits.
Sikeston will host Egyptian, Ill., today at 4 p.m.
POPLAR BLUFF -- Whittney Beggs made her return to Kelly's lineup on Tuesday after missing nearly two weeks of action due to illness.
The junior pitcher picked up where she left off, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and four walks. She also recorded six strikeouts in the win.
"I was proud of Whittney," said Kelly coach Rhonda Evans. "She's a little weak coming back, but she's got to get some throwing in this week. All in all, I thought she did a good job."
Kelly plated the nine runs on 14 hits. Rachel Kline was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Bethany Beggs was also 2-for-3.
Kristin Harper was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Ashley Kern was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Ashley Rockett was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Other hits came from Jessica Burnett, Monica Senciboy, Mindy Robert and Stephanie Hency.
"The girls came through in the fifth inning and started hitting the ball," said Evans. "We had hits up and down the lineup and everybody racked up the RBIs. With two weeks left until districts, that's what a coach wants to see."
Poplar Bluff's Lindsey Ploetze was charged with the loss. Lauren Browning paced the Lady Mules' offense, batting 2-for-3.
Kelly scored one run in the first inning, two in the second, four in the fifth and two in the seventh. Poplar Bluff scored two in the second and one in the fourth.
Kelly (10-3) will host Dongola today at 4 p.m.
