EAST PRAIRIE - Roy Wilburn, 78, died at 6 a.m. April 19, 2005, at his rural East Prairie residence.

Born March 10, 1927, in New Madrid County to the late Louis and Nora Hinton Wilburn, he lived all his life near East Prairie where he was a farmer, retiring in 1989 after which he managed the farming operation. A member of the First Baptist Church in East Prairie, he served as a deacon, was former chairman of the deacons, was in the adult men's Sunday class and served on several church committees. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army with the 78th Infantry as part of a reconnaissance troop.

On Nov. 24, 1958, he married Agnes Sumner, who preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 2003.

Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Jane Conner of Germantown, Tenn.; one brother, Louis Wilburn Jr. of East Prairie; one sister, Helen Stallings of East Prairie; one granddaughter, Carole Lynne Conner of Memphis, Tenn.; and two special nieces, Stephanie Vaughan Meredith of Cadiz, Ky., and Jennifer Vaughan of Louisville, Ky.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd, Donald and Gilbert Wilburn; and three sisters, Opal Myers, Beulah Wilburn and Izola Smith.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie. Services will beg at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in East Prairie with George White officiating.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Starkie-Thomas Cemetery near Cadiz.

Pallbearers will be Winston, David, Ricky, Dickie and Lindsey Wilburn, Wayne Adkisson, Jerry Stallings, Larry Britt, Scott Meredith and Michael Bryan.

Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Myers, deacons of the First Baptist Church, Leonard Baker, Gene Hall, Kelly Barker, Donald Dick, Milas Mainord and Mike Richards.
