SIKESTON - Joe Allen Jr., a premedical student in the U.S. Army, has been assigned to Washington University in St. Louis for college work, he has written to his mother, Mrs. Irma Allen.

SIKESTON - The Southeast Missouri Drummers Association, one of the oldest groups in the state, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Midtowner Restaurant for a steak dinner.


PARMA - While nobody reported seeing any funnels, there was every indication Saturday that a tornado touched down on the Mahan Plantation, leaving $15,000 damage in its wake.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Board of Utilities Wednesday night opened bids for a new transformer to be used at the Southwest Power Administration substation west of the new power plant on Compress Road.

CHARLESTON - If this is Charleston at its worst, then the Bluejays could be world-beaters by playoff time. Charleston gave Poplar Bluff a 63-52 loss - its first of the season - Tuesday in a Sikeston Invitational Tournament semifinal game. Charleston will play the Sikeston-Blytheville winner on Friday for the tournament championship.


SIKESTON - The City of Lights Committee conducted its annual lighting ceremony Tuesday night at American Legion Park. The Twelve Days of Christmas is the theme for this year's City of Lights tours, which are conducted weekdays through Dec. 22 with shuttles available from the Kingsway Mall, Outlet Mall and downtown Sikeston offering three different tours.
