Sikeston Legion goes 2-1 at Mountain Home
MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. -- Sikeston's American Legion team went 2-1 in the 24-team Mountain Home Tournament over the weekend, evening its overall record to 4-4.
Post 114 lost its first game of the tournament to Little Rock Oxford 7-5 on Thursday.
After falling behind early, Sikeston came back to tie the score 4-4 in the fifth. Oxford pulled away with a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to had Post 114 its only loss of the tournament.
Sikeston plated one run in the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough. Mack Taylor paced the team at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Josh Miller was charged with the loss.
The team came back on Friday and beat Litchfield, Ill., 17-5 in three innings.
Willie Dooley had a monster game, blasting two home runs. He finished the game 3-for-3 with six RBIs.
Litchfield jumped out early with two runs in the top of the first. Sikeston fired back with four runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a three-run shot by Dooley.
Dooley provided a two-run homer in the second inning as Sikeston added 13 more runs to the board. Post 114 then scored one in the third, ending the game on a mercy rule.
Scotty Keenan picked up the win for Sikeston and aided his own cause, batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Ben Pyles was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Miller was 2-for-3 and Matt Smith was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
On Saturday, Sikeston won its final game of the tournament over Searcy, Ark., 7-5.
Jake Kimball provided a home run in the second inning, then Sikeston added two more in the top of the fifth to make it 3-0.
Searcy exploded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Sikeston answered with four in the top of the sixth. Nathan Eaves, Drew Lawrence and Dooley all had RBIs to put Sikeston up 7-4.
Searcy came back to score one run in the sixth, but Post 114 was able to hold on for the win.
Ben Stricklin picked up the win. At the plate, Eaves was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Lawrence was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Dooley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Keenan was 2-for-4 and Miller was 2-for-4.
"It was a real good tournament," said Sikeston coach Charlie Dye. "I was proud of the way the kids went down there and played. Even though we didn't get in the finals, we played well against some good competition. As a team, we hit .459 and our pitching was solid. Even though Josh lost, he threw a really good game against Oxford. Stricklin pitched against Searcy, and they had five JUCO players on their team. He really threw a nice game, holding them to seven hits."
