Speakout (12/1)

Monday, December 1, 2003

I have been receiving your paper for several years and I know there are several people who are receiving it because I gave their names to you in the free renewal program. I am 78 years old and not one time was ever told that you offered a discount to senior citizens. You will probably say, "I'm sorry." Why was I not made aware of this? Is this the way you thank a senior citizen? How many other people have never been told?

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The Standard Democrat offers a senior citizen discount to subscribers ages 62 and over, however, we have no way of knowing the ages of our subscribers. If you are a subscriber to the Standard and qualify for the discount, please call our Circulation Department at 471-4141 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The offices are closed on the weekend.

To the person who called about "No longer a secret" and the grass being better on the other side, maybe if they know so much, they should go forward and tell the other husband and the other wife because I'm sure they would want to know. They may want to start their lives over and would want this information to help them do it. Don't worry about hurting them because they are probably already hurt bad enough and may just need that little extra boost to get their lives started over. So don't be scared. Go ahead and tell them. I'm sure they'd want to know.

To the person who took the pink roses from the City Cemetery, if you needed roses or you ordered roses, just ask someone and they would have bought some for you. Why do you have to take them from someone who has died? Don't disrespect them. They are a memorial for the person who has passed away. Just leave them alone.

To the person who said city employees make $200,000 to $300,000 a year, I am a city employee. I would qualify for government assistance if I didn't have pride and took it.

It's not even 6 a.m. and I heard over the scanner where some neighbors blew some leaves over on the easement of another neighbor's yard and they didn't like it so they blew them back onto the other neighbor's driveway. I can't believe the police are having to go to these kinds of calls. I would give anything if my neighbors would rake their leaves. I wouldn't argue about "leaves?" People should be cleaning up their yards and fixing things up instead of arguing and fighting with their neighbors. People, stop hating!
