SIKESTON - Summer weather prevailed in Sikeston during the past few days. On Tuesday this was evident with the low temperature being 46 and the high 75.

MALDEN - A major step toward a new auxiliary building for Malden was made last week when a check for $4,500 was presented to the city by Mrs. Elise Byrd and Miss Mary Kochnitsky, sisters.

SIKESTON - Miss Mississippi County for 1996 is Melanie Lawrence, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lawrence of Campbell and a sophomore at Southeast Missouri State University. Winning the pageant Saturday night, promoted by the East Prairie Optimist Club and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, entitles Miss Lawrence to compete in July in the Miss Missouri Pageant.

NEW MADRID - While cold temperatures and icy waters forced the U.S. Coast Guard to close the upper Mississippi River, there were no problems noted by area ports. From St. Louis to Cairo, Ill., the river was closed to vessel traffic due to ice. On the southern end of the river however, officials say it has been business as usual.


SIKESTON - Demand is up, but the supply of substitute teachers is down. Partial blame is being placed on low wages, no benefits and lack of support. Beginning this school year, teachers who don't miss any days the first quarter will receive a $50 bonus and apparently, the idea is working. The incentive was introduced to the teachers through an enterprise grant from Bootheel Epworth.


NEW MADRID - Mark Winkler, State Emergency Management Agency area coordinator, conducted an earthquake seminar at New Madrid Health Department today. Winkler spoke to a group of law enforcement officers and interested residents about the potential for earthquakes.
