Arrest is made in Ruth St. shooting
SIKESTON -- The Sikeston man arrested in connection with Tuesday's shooting has been identified by authorities.
Following a rapid investigation by the Sikeston Department of Public Safety's Criminal Investigative Unit, detectives arrested Nicholas D. Gilbert, 27, of 307 Virginia St., for the early morning shooting of Stacy Townsend and Frederick Cotton. The arrest came just 12 hours after the assault occurred.
DPS received a call at around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday of gunshots fired in the 800 block of Ruth Street.
Townsend and Cotton were reportedly near 824 Ruth at around that time when shots were fired in their direction, striking them both. Both victims sustained minor injuries from the assault.
Information gathered from the victims and witnesses led to the arrest of Gilbert at 2:28 p.m. Tuesday at Gilbert's residence.
Scott County Prosecutor Paul Boyd issued warrants Wednesday charging Gilbert with two counts of first degree assault and armed criminal action.
Bond is set at $150,000 cash or surety and he remains at the Scott County jail. Gilbert's arraignment on the charges is set for Tuesday.
Drew Juden, DPS director, expressed his appreciation for all of the officers involved in the investigation, crediting the prompt apprehension of Gilbert to their hard work put forth early on following the incident.
