NEW MADRID - William Gene "Billy Gene" Fowler, 76, died Dec. 14, 2006, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Born July 6, 1930, in Akron, Ohio, son of the late Emma Jacobs Fowler Moore and Alfred Fowler and stepfather, Amos Moore, he was a resident of New Madrid, where he was a farmer before semi-retiring in 1989. He was a member of the New Madrid Methodist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War stationed in Germany and a member of the American Legion Post 595, Kiwanis Club and Eagles Club of New Madrid. He also served as a board member for New Madrid Country Club, as well as a member of the Men's Golf Association. He was a good friend, father and husband.

On Sept. 29, 1956, in Portageville, he married Mary Elizabeth Sutherland, who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Diane Fowler of New Madrid; two daughters, Beth Fowler and Lydia Fowler of New Madrid; six grandchildren, Toni Taylor Phelps, William Kyle Taylor, Aaron and Ryan Fowler and Matthew and Parker Whitehead all of New Madrid; and his only great-granddaughter, Brea Phelps of New Madrid, whom he cherished.

Also surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Elouise and Buck Buchanan of Marietta, Ga.; one half-brother and two half-sisters, Jimmy Fowler of Clarksville, Tenn., Jane Dunlop of Humbolt, Tenn., and Shirley Castleberry of Columbia, Tenn.; and a special friend, Beth Lewis of New Madrid.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Jack Ketcher will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery at New Madrid.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons: William Kyle Taylor, Aaron Fowler, Ryan Fowler, Matthew Whitehead, Parker Whitehead and honorary grandson, Kyle Harris.
