Your view: Conservatism

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Dear Editor:

Can Democrats tell the truth? At a Democratic Party potluck held in Bloomfield on July 29, Veronica Hambacker, who is running in the Demo primary for congress-woman Joann Emerson's seat, called conservativism a "failed ideology". That is a lie!

After all, look at the achievements of conservativism.

Conservative Evangelicals brought an end to slavery, passed the 13th amendment, gave women the right to vote, and passed the 1965 Civil Rights Act. A conservative president Ronald Reagan brought an end to the cold war which dissolved the Soviet Union and tore down the Berlin Wall. He also made Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday. Conservatives are passing laws upholding the sanctity of human life and traditional marriage. We must have conservatives in the White House and Congress if we are going to win the war against terror.

Liberalism and its philosophies of Marxism, secular humanism, and evolution is the cause of racism and other evils in our nation. That can be proved.

No, conservativism is not a failed ideology. It is vibrant and successful! As Sean Hannity said today, we conservatives get frustrated at times with the Republican Party but we sure don't want liberals governing our nation in a time of war.

A proud conservative,

Richard D. Swift
