Portageville girls post home victory; Bravettes dominate Risco on the road

PORTAGEVILLE -- The Portageville girls basketball team improved to 13-5 on the season with a 75-44 home victory against Bootheel Conference foe Senath-

Hornersville on Thursday.

Portageville moves to 5-1 in league play while Senath-Hornersville dropped to 8-10 and 3-3 in the conference.

Portageville took a 17-8 lead after one quarter but only led 29-22 at halftime.

But the Lady Bulldogs exploded in the third period, out-scoring Senath-

Hornersville 26-12 to blow the game open.

"At halftime we talked about playing smarter and not just playing so loose with the ball," said Portageville coach Eric Ellerbrook. "We came out and tightened up our defense. Then our shots starting falling. Everybody played a good game in the second half."

Kellye Penn led the Lady Bulldogs with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jeleea Drake added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Brittney Walker scored 15 points.

Odle led Senath-Hornersville with 13 points.

Portageville won the junior varsity game 55-25. Courtney Chamberlain led Portageville with 14 points.

Portageville will play at Sikeston with junior varsity action starting at noon on Saturday.

RISCO -- The Scott County Central Bravettes defeated the Risco Lady Tigers on the road Thursday night, 65-32.

The Bravettes had a huge first half and got past the scrappy Lady Tigers, who suited on five players for the game.

Brittney Peet led Scott Central with 18 points. Samantha Jones had 16 points and Lakesha Turner chipped in 11 points.

Freshman Brittany Burnett led Risco (1-9) with 18 points. Chelsea Carlisle hit two 3-pointers for the Lady Tigers and ended the contest with 10 points. Scott Central travels to NMCC on Monday at 6 p.m.
