Nobody asked me but...

Nobody asked me but...despite a great effort on homecoming night against a talented New Madrid County Central football team, the Sikeston Bulldogs remain winless at 0-6 for the 2006 campaign.

The Bulldogs did show some signs of life against the Eagles. The passing attack led by sophomore Charlie Bohannon has all the markings of a top notch aerial assault with Joey Williams and Michael Payne at wideouts.

Running back Bryon Davis morphed into Reggie Bush last Friday night with five catches for 104 yards out of the backfield.

The biggest applause should go out to Bohannon behind center. A sophomore third-string backup to Chase Ferrell and Payne to begin the season, Bohannon had a monster game against the Eagles, passing for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

Sikeston travels to Kennett on Friday looking for its first win. If history is any indication, the Bulldogs' chances appear to be favorable.

In 1970, Sikeston entered the Kennett game 0-4 and left with a 34-0 rout for their only win of the season finishing 1-8. In 1973, the Bulldogs faced Kennett at 0-3 and defeated the Indians 14-6 for that season's only win finishing 1-8.

Skip ahead to last year when the Bulldogs entered at 0-6 and repeated history for the Sikeston program with a 26-20 win over Kennett for the only win of the season in a 1-9 campaign.

Now, a lot of my colleagues around the area are thinking that Kennett will take this game against the Bulldogs. I've been hearing all year from people how Kennett will beat Sikeston.

As for me, look into my previous columns as to why I like Sikeston in this matchup.

* Charleston looked the part of a injury-depleted team in its 50-14 football loss to the Dexter Bearcats last Friday night. The 36-point loss was the most lopsided by the Bluejays since two seasons ago when the Caruthersville Tigers won by 44 points.

Charleston allowed 50 points for the first time since 2001 when NMCC posted a 54-0 beat down of the Bluejays. Before 2001, Charleston gave up over 50 points in 1986 when the Jackson Indians won 60-0.

With senior running back Joseph Watts still hurting from an early-season ankle injury and delegated to the defense only, sophomore Jerquawn Sherrell would appear to be the heir apparent.

Against the Bearcats, Sherrell had only five carries for 70 yards. Sherrell only had two carries in the first half. This from a player who had a 91-yard kick return for Charleston. Free Sherrell. I foresee Sherrell getting more carries in the future.

* Some midseason awards for high school football:

Best player: Ryan Criglar - Malden

Best lineman: William Cooper - Hayti

Best quarterback: Josh Stevens - Dexter

Best running back: Kendrickus Reed - Caruthersville

Best receiver: Jamie Pinkston - Scott City

Best defensive player: Tremayne Pickens - Hayti

Surprise player: M.C. Williams - East Prairie

Best coach: Aaron Pixley - Dexter

* The Kelly Lady Hawks softball team looks to have a favorable path to the final four this season with last year's spoiler, Strafford, is located in the lower bracket away from Kelly. Fearless prediction: Kelly fans will have to book reservations because they are headed for Columbia.

* Since many question my ability to prognosticate local and national sports, here is something to chew on...in a repeat of the 1968 series, the St. Louis Cardinals will win the World Series this season over the upstart Detroit Tigers.

And finally, nobody asked me but...a fun nugget for our sports crazed readers.

The alternative band Pearl Jam's first album "Ten" was named for the jersey number worn by University of Oklahoma standout and former NBA All-Star, Mookie Blaylock.

In addition, before officially naming the band Pearl Jam, the group was first known as -- what else -- Mookie Blaylock.

These are the things you know when you're a Pearl Jam nut.
