Eugene Slayton

SIKESTON -- Wayne Eugene "Skeeter" Slayton, 84, died Oct. 5, 2008, at the Clearview Nursing Center.

Born March 30, 1924, in Senath, son of the late Shelby Turner and Minnie Elizabeth Taylor Slayton, he was a member of New Beginnings Fellowship Church. He had been a maintenance foreman for Kansas City Medical University before retiring.

On March 29, 1978, he married Maggie Kingfisher Leslie who preceded him in death Nov. 8, 2006.

He was also preceded in death by seven brothers, Glen Slayton, Emory Slayton, Melvin Slayton, Randall Slayton, Bob Slayton and two infant brothers; two sisters, Laura Medlin and Louise Edwards; and one great grandson.

Survivors include: four sons and a daughter-in-law, John and Thelma Slayton of Canalou, Darrell Slayton of North Little Rock, Ark., Barry Slayton of Columbia and Michael Bennett of East Prairie; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Sharon and Curt Spencer and Helen and Ron Beardsley of Sikeston, Diana Tolliver of North Little Rock and Teresa "Julie" Taylor of Cape Girardeau; one brother, Marion Slayton of McKuin, Tenn.; and 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Ponder Funeral Home. Ron Beardsley II, Tom Foster and Josh Beardsley officiated.

Burial followed in the Matthews Cemetery at Matthews.
