Sikeston girls drop opener

Portageville and NMCC roll Monday

DONIPHAN -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs basketball team dropped their opening game of the season Monday to the Doniphan Donnettes 58-42.

The inexperienced Lady Bulldogs played the Donnettes close the entire way trailing 25-19 at the half before cutting the lead to 42-39 after three. Doniphan then outscored Sikeston 14-3 in the final quarter to seal the game.

"We played a very experienced team," said Sikeston coach Homer Jackson. "Our team is very young with mostly freshman."

Sikeston (0-1) was led by Asia Liggins' 17 points. The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action Monday when they take on Delta at 7 p.m. in the Chaffee Tournament.

Bulldog Classic

STEELE -- The Portageville Lady Bulldogs and New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles both cruised to wins in the first round of the Bulldog Classic Monday.

Portageville, the top seed, knocked off South Pemiscot in the first game of the day 67-19. Jaleea Drake scored 18 while Kaitlyn Nowlin and Courtney Chamberlain added 14 and 10 points respectively.

Second seeded NMCC also rolled to an easy win over Malden 53-34. Shameika Williams led the Lady Eagles with 24 points while Shanequa Daniels chipped in 10.

Other games saw sixth seeded Kennett defeat Senath Hornersville 43-32 and fourth seeded Campbell take care of Caruthersville 66-39.

Portageville (3-0) will take on Campbell at 7 p.m. Thursday while NMCC (1-0) will take on Kennett at 8:30 p.m.
