CANALOU -- L.J. Harwood Sr., 82, died Jan. 4, 2009, at the Sells Close to Home Nursing Center in Matthews.

Born May 4, 1926, in Center Ridge, Ark., to the late Perd and Annie Hill Harwood, he had lived in the Canalou area most of his life. He retired as a laborer from the Gemeinhardt Grain Elevator, was a member of the Church of Christ, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II.

On Sept. 19, 1951, in Piggott, Ark., he married Emma Lee Scroggins who preceded him in death on June 20, 2000.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include: two sons, Larry Harwood Jr. and Gary Harwood of Sikeston; two daughters, Sonja Meek of Arlington, Tenn., and Carolyn Farrenburg of New Madrid; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Morehouse. Jimmy Colvett of Matthews will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Matthews Community Cemetery.
