Join Sikeston's big celebration

The calendar has turned to 2010 and that means a year-long Sesquicentennial celebration for Sikeston residents. Our proud community turns 150 this year and from the look of things, there will be ample to celebrate throughout the entire year.

For those of us who remember the centennial celebration in 1960, we vividly recall the pageantry of that massive undertaking. It will be hard to match that celebration but it won't stop Sikeston residents from trying.

Throughout the year, there will be events and books and exhibits and so much more. In other words, 2010 will give Sikeston residents an opportunity to celebrate and share our proud heritage with others in this region and beyond.

For those who have not yet read Ned Matthews' book, "Matthews: The Historic Adventures of a Pioneer Family," you're missing a treat. This book details the history of Sikeston through the eyes of one of the founding families of our community. It is rich with details and a fascinating glimpse at the origins of this region.

Like any other community, Sikeston has had her share of ups and downs. That is to be expected. But our proud heritage is worth repeating. This year will give all of us a chance to relive the proud past and perhaps take a brief look into our future.

I too often complain about the lack of progress here but only because I recognize the potential for even more growth and progress. The stark reality is that Sikeston today is far far different than when those first few settlers decided to make this home.

Through the years, we've weathered our share of storms. But we've also seen substantial progress on countless fronts. The challenge, of course, is to continue that path of growth and progress.

I hope all Sikeston residents - regardless of how long you have called Sikeston home - take time this year to relive some of our rich past. And by doing so, perhaps more of us can rededicate ourselves to making this an even better community.
