Strong second half lifts Scott City past Oran

Hogan leads Lady Rams with 16 points

ORAN -- For one half, the Oran Lady Eagles hung tough with the visiting Scott City Lady Rams.

However, a cold shooting third quarter and a lopsided fourth led to a 57-41 Scott City win at Oran High School.

"We've been doing a really good job offensively as working as a unit and we got a little impatient and sped up the tempo," Oran coach Adam Friga said about their second half downfall. "We needed to put a little bit more effort on the boards. We'd do it at times but we need to do it consistently."

Led by Haley Glastetter's 13 first half points, Oran (10-11) took their last lead of the night with four-and-a-half minutes remaining in the second quarter with a basket from Glastetter.

Scott City junior Katie Hogan answered 30 seconds later to put the Lady Rams back on top by one.

Glastetter finished the quarter with five more points including a classic 3-point play to cut Scott City's lead to one, 21-20, with 27.6 seconds left.

Hogan, who led Scott City with 16 points, answered Glastetter's bucket again with 15 seconds left before halftime to push the Lady Rams' ahead by three, 23-20, which held until the half.

"They didn't give us a lot of our shots and we weren't looking into our post," Scott City coach Ricky Keller said about their first half. "We had them. I just don't think they were looking."

Hogan and Oran's Halle Woodfin, who finished with nine points, exchanged two baskets before Scott City's Katie Rhymer made it 29-24 to open the third quarter. Following a bucket by Addie Kielhofner, Oran turned the ball over on six of their next seven possessions including five missed shots to end the frame.

By that time, Scott City (18-4) had built an 11-point lead, 35-26, going into the fourth quarter.

"We finally starting hitting our high-low and utilizing our post," Keller said. "Our guards stepped up and hit some big shots. When shots are falling, it helps."

Glastetter, who led Oran with 15 points, broke the Lady Eagles' scoreless stretch a minute-and-a-half into the fourth period with a steal and layup on the other end.

Oran got as close as four points from the Lady Rams following a steal and a 3-pointer by Chrissy Sauceda. But soon after, Scott City ran off 18-straight points, which included nine from Melanie Lacey, to smother any hopes of an Oran comeback.

"We went zone to the press a few times and I think that helped because they didn't know what to expect," said Keller. "We slowed their two shooters down there too. I think that made the biggest difference (in the fourth quarter)."

Behind Hogan's 16 points, Lacey finished with 14 while Rhymer added 11 for the Lady Rams.
